Notes
a. Note:   David and Alpha are buried in the Salem Cemetery located about ten miles south of the town of Chariton, Iowa. Their graves and marker is located next to the graves of their son Edward Arnold and Edward's wife Sophia.[Arnold.FTW] After they were married, David and Alpha moved west to Muskegum County, Ohio, in 1817. Their son, Stephen Seaward Arnold, was born in Ohio in 1830 when David was 38 years of age. David lived near New Concord, Ohio in 1830. The booklet published by the town of New Concord in the 1980s described the early town layout and lists the early lot owners. Among the owners was David Arnold who had purchased the second lot east of the intersection of Main and Liberty Streets on the south side of Main Street.. He apparently bought the lot on speculation, planning for the value to increase as the town grew. Several other residents did the same. His son, Samuel, owned the second lot further east and built a large house there which is currently known as the Nelson-Arnold House. Daivd and Alpha moved further west in 1855 with son, Stephen, and Stephen's wife Elizabeth (Gill). At the time Daivd was 63 years old. David died in Lucas County, Iowa, in 1880. Alpha lived the remainder of her life with her sons, Stephen and Edward. She died in Chariton, Iowa, at age 95. David's grave is located in the Salem Cemetery about ten miles south of Chariton, Iowa. His son Edward's and Edward's wife's graves are adjacent to David's. David's stone is a classical pillar of pink marble with his name, dates of birth and death, and birthplace, Herkimer County, New York, inscribed on it. The stone does not have Alpha's name inscribed. The following are directions to the Salem Cemetery. Beginning at the RR overpass, east of Chariton, Iowa, heading east, turn right onto a dirt road at the bottom of the east side of the overpass. Cross the RR track and bear left. After a few sweeping turns and about 2.0 miles, cross the RR tracks again. In 1.2 miles, a road intersects from the right. Turn right and immediately cross a RR track. A distance of 0.2 miles further, the cemetery will appear on the left. The Arnold markers are near the left rear boundary of the cemetery.
