Note: [Arnold.FTW] Stephen Arnold graduated from Oberlin College in Ohio in about 1854. According to letters that Mary Arnold Lee, grandaughter of David Phetteplace Arnold, wrote to Alice Maud (Arnold) Neel in the 1930s, Stephen's eldest sister, Lucy, made fine shirts which were sold to various of Stephen's college class mates. The money earned helped him to attend college. After college, Stephen married Elizbeth Margaret Gill and they moved to Galesburg, Illinois, where he worked in the milling business. theri first child, Allice Carrie was born in Galesburg. They then moved back to Muskegum County, Ohio where Alpha Rosalie was born. After 1856 and beore 1858, they with his parents, David and Alpha Arnold, moved to Dallas Township, Marion County, Iowa. His brother, Edward had preceeded them to Iowa, moving there in Spring, 1855. In 1872 Edward moved to Benton Township south of Chariton. On August 17, 1862, Stephen and his brother, Edward, enlisted in the Union Army, Stephen in Company K of the Iowa 40th Infantry Regiment. Edward enlisted in Company G of the Iowa 48th Infantry Regiment. The details of Stephen's service record is as follows: Captain Stephen S. Arnold, Age 32 Newbern, Marion County, Iowa Nativity - Muskegum County, Ohio Enlisted - August 17, 1862; Mustered September 20, 1862 Promoted to 2nd Sergeant - March 17, 1863 Promoted to Sergeant Major - 1864 Promoted to 2.Lt - Jun 21, 1864 Promoted to Capt Co. K, 40th regiment - Nov 26, 1864 Mustered out - August 2, 1865 at Ft. Gibson, Cherokee Nation. After the war, Stephen returned to Iowa and began accumulating land in Dallas township of Marion County. By 1875 he had accumulated considerble land in Tonship 74 North, Range 21 West. He also had land in several other locations. By 1895. By 1875, Stephen had acquired considerable land in Marion County. The farms of the Graves Family were located nearby south of the S. S. Arnold property. By 1901, Stephen had sold most of his Dallas Twnp. property and was living in Chariton.
