Database at www.ancestry.com. (published). Per Christine Garrison of Austin, TX on 7/21/2013: The family tale says the Hallie's husband returned from the war with terminal injuries from being gassed in Europe. She went with him to Matagorda County for veteran care but he died shortly after. While they were on the coast, their son Pat was kept by Hallie's parents in San Antonio. When she returned to San Antonio a widow, she started to look for work to support herself and her son but discovering that she was pregnant, she was out of luck. She gave birth probably in 1925 to Laban Mahan Jr. (Called Bubbs by his family) in San Antonio. For a time, Hallie had to give up the boys to the Sisters orphanage while she worked menial jobs to care for herself. When she remarried, to Ivan Mercer, she was able to regain custody of Pat and Bubbs. She and Ivan Mercer had two more boys: George and Jimmie (James).
