Magers Obit - Newspaper Unknown MAGERS FUNERAL The funeral for George Albert Magers, 66, of 464 E. Washington St., Harrisonburg will be held 2 P.M. Sunday at the Kyger & Trobaugh Funeral Home. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Craig Snow. Burial will be in Eastlawn Memorial Gardens. Mr. Magers died Thursday at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, where he had been a patient since May 8. He was born June 2, 1920 in Homer, Ill., and was a son of the late James A. and Henrietta Ehlers Magers. Mr. Magers was a retired rehabilitation administrator for the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. He worked for over thirty years helping the blind and was directly responsible for the placement of over 2,000 blind and visually impaired individuals throughout his career. In 1972, he received the Presidential Citation for the Handicapped and the Douglas McFarland Award, and in 1979 he received the Migel Medal, the highest honor bestowed by the American Foundation for the Blind. He received a master's degree in special education from the University of Illinois at Urbana and a bachelor's from Eastern Illinois State College at Charleston. He had published numerous books and journal articles relating to and was a director and designer of the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation for the state of Nevada. He moved to Harrisonburg Oct. 29, 1979 from Bowie, Md. , and attended the Baptist Church. On February. 23, 1942, he married Naomi Evelene Dyar, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Maurice Keith Magers of Weyers Cave and Steven Magers of Carol Stream, Ill.; a daughter Elaine Simpson of Grottoes; two sisters, Madonna Scott of Martinez, Calif., and Doris Magers of Springfield, Ill.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. The family will receive friends 7-8 P.M. today at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested that donations be made to the Mary Bryant Home for the Blind, Springfield, Ill.
