Johann Christian Ehlers Family Early Effingham county residents were the members of the Johann Christian Ehlers family who arrived in 1864. When the family arrived in the United States from Bremen, Germany, they settled in New Bremen, IL. (now Blue Island). Later, they moved to the Altamont area and spent the first winter in a home along the National Road. In the spring, they built a log cabin adjacent to the northeastern part of Altamont. In 1869 the family suffered a great loss in the death of Johann Ehlers, the husband and father. His wife, Elizabeth, was confronted with the awesome task of rearing 4 small children:Friederich, henry, Elizabeth, and John, ranging in ages from 2 to 10. Other task facing her were to operate the family farm and build a permanent home. With great determination, courage, and a strong faith in God. Elizabeth Ehlers successfully operated the family farm. As the children became older, they helped her. Also , this family group worked together to provide a farm for each child. A shot time after her husband's death, Mrs Ehlers, with the help of her two brothers: Frederick and William Buchholtz, built a large two-story brick home which still stands at 107 E. Jackson Ave. and is occupied by the fifth generation of the Elizabeth Ehlers family(1981). The five generations who have lived there are Elizabeth Ehlers, Friederich Ehlers, Miriam Ehlers Mery, Carla Mery Seagle, and Brett and Sara Seagle. Presently, the home is owned by Mr. and Mrs. Newell Mery of Effingham.
