a. Note:   Rest for the toiling hand, Rest for the anxious brow, Rest for the weary, way-sore feet, Rest from all labor now. William Buchholz was born July 29 1838 , Schweringen Province Hanover, Germany and departed this life April 6, 1899 at his late home in Altamont , Illinois; aged 60 years, 8 months and 7 days. He came when a young man with his brother Frederick and Sister Elizabeth Ehlers to this country in 1856 and located near New Bremen, Cook County, Illinois. In 1863 he was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal church at that place. On April 7, 1861 he married Rebecca Schmekpeper, and to them was given 7 children, 2 boys and 5 daughters one dying in infancy. In October 1864 he came to Effingham county, and has lived near and in Altamont since. He was one of the first members of the German Society of the Methodist Episcopal church at Altamont, Illinois. His first wife died November 17, 1882. On April 26, 1864, he was married to Pricilla Jane Bowman, to whom was given 1 son. He leaves a widow, 7 children, 1 sister and many relatives and a host of friends. he lived in the church about 36 years. On the account of Sister Pricilla Buchholz not understanding the German language, he transferred hes church membership from the German Society to the English, August 18, 1895. Brother Buchholz was a careful, conscientious Chistian, and especially during the past few months enjoyed a deep religious experience, as we have often heard him testify for Jesus. We shall miss him very much . Peace to his memory; sympathy and love for his mourning loved-ones. The funeral services were conducted by the pastor, assisted by Revs. Bon and Ehlert, both in English and German, in the presence of a very large congregation, Sunday at 2 P. M., April 9, 1899. Not dead but living. He came to the United States as a stowaway on the ship that brought his sister and brother. He purchased 120 acres of land from he Illinois Central Railroad, FEB. 28, 1871
