Newspaper article upon the death of Sarah (Temple) Douglass: "Mrs. Sarah Douglass" Sarah Temple was born in Woodford, Vt., October 10, 1824. She was married to Robert Douglass January 1, 1847.* To this union three children were born, of whom two are still living.** Mr. Douglass having died, the widow came to Illinois in 1859 and settled in Wilton township (in Will County, Illinois).*** On June 5, 1865, she was married to Joel Douglass.**** One son was the fruit of this union. Mr. Douglass died in 1866,***** and a short time after his widow moved to Peotone where she made her home until a few years ago. For the past year and a half she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. John Norman, of Ashkum. For some time Mrs. Douglass was in failing health. She sank gradually until the end came Friday morning April 18 (1902). The remains were brought to Peotone Sunday morning. Service was held in the M.E. (Methodist Episcopal ?) church at 8:30, Rev. J. Lee officiating. A large number of old friends and neighbors followed the remains to their last resting place in the family lot at Wilton Center. The deceased was a consistent member of the Methodist church. In life she was quiet and unassuming and was highly respected by all who knew her. The surviving children are Mrs. John Norman (nee Lucinda Douglass), of Ashkum: Mrs. Walter Tipling (nee Cynthia Jane Douglass) of Fontenelle (Fontanelle), Iowa; Robert Douglass, of Chicago. Two brothers and two sisters also survive. They are William Temple, Beatrice, Nebraska; Chris Temple, Spring Valley, Minnesota; Mrs. Mary Hayes, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin; Mrs. George Berry, of Wilton. * Handwritten notes about the Douglass family suggest that Sarah Temple and Robert Douglass were married on January 1, 1846. (Their first child was born on December 5, 1846.) ** Handwritten notes show that James Temple Douglass was born 5 December 1846 and died June 9, 1867. Lucinda Abagail Douglas Norman (born August 13, 1849) and Cynthia Jane Douglass Tipling (born February 10, 1851) survived their mother. *** Per 1860 U. S. cenus records (M653, Roll 238, PP 179-180), Sarah lived with her brother Ira Kempill (should be Temple) in Wesley Twp, Will Co, IL. along with two of her three children, James and Lucinda. **** Handwritten notes say that Sarah Douglass married Joel Brown on July 13, 1865 who died five months later on 9 December 1865. On April 16, 1866, there was a child born named Robert Ira Brown. He later went by the name Robert Ira Brown Douglass. The 1870 U. S. census for Peotone, Will Co, IL (M593, Roll 292, p. 25) shows Sarah Douglas (46 b. NY) and Robert Brown (4 b. IL). ***** Handwritten notes say that Joel Brown died December 9, 1865. ............................................................................................................................. "Obituary" Mrs. Sarah Douglass was born in Vermont in 1824. She moved to Illinois about forty years ago, making her home in Peotone for a good many years. She died of senility in Ashkum at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Norman, on Friday, April 18, 1902. She leaves three children, Mrs. John Norman (nee Lucinda Abagail Douglass) of Ashkum; Mrs. Tipling (nee Cynthia Jane Douglass), of Fontaville (Fontanelle), Iowa; Mr. Robert Douglass, of Chicago, and two brothers and two sisters and five grandchildren. She had been a member of the Methodist church for many years and was a faithful christian woman. The funeral services were held in the Peotone M. E. church, Rev. Lee officiating. Interment at Wilton Center, west of Peotone. Those who called on here account (of) Mrs. Douglass' death were: Mr. and Mrs. Walter Tipling, Fontaville (Fontanelle), Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Berry, Peotone, and Mr. Robert Douglass, Chicago. ............................................................................................................................. June 9, 1867, aged 20 or 26 (should be 20) years) ... and her brother Ira Temple (a fallen patriot, died and buried at Andersonville Prison, June 10, 1864, aged 45 years, 8 months , 20 days; taken prisoner at the Battle of Chickamauga). .............................................................................................................................
