Note: Family records show William TEMPLE was born on 1 April 1793 and died on 28 December 1874. No location is given for his birth or his death. In 1860 Wilton, Will Co, IL, (M653, Roll 238, p. 159) William KEMPEL (should be TEMPLE) lists Mass. as the state where he was born. In 1870, he is living with his son Christopher in Spring Valley, Fillmore Co, MN (T132, Roll 3, p. 63), and William's birthplace is shown as VT. In 1880, William's daughter Sarah Douglass who was living in Peotone, Will Co, IL (T9, Roll 260, p. 4) says that her father was born in Conn. and her mother was born in NH. We have yet to find William's birth location. His death location is uncertain too. We believe that he may have died in Spring Valley, Fillmore Co, MN, because that is where he was living in 1870, four years before his death. However, we have not located his death record. ............................................................................................................................. William was buying and selling land in Woodford, Bennington Co. VT, from 1819 to 1824. There may be other earlier or later transactions. We have not completed our research on these deeds. ............................................................................................................................. The LDS microfilm # 0029158, Town Records of Woodford, Bennington Co, VT, Vol V., p 9 or 7, identifies William as Ebenezer's son. They are mentioned in a real estate document of the Bennington Iron Company dated 12 May 1827: "And also a certain stone ledge or quarry of the fine stone situated and being in Woodford, aforesaid, being the same which Thomas Trevor purchased of Ebenezer Temple situate in said Woodford at or near the foot of the hill on the north side of the pond branch, that is to say the right of diging in the said quarry and of carrying off the stone at pleasure (liberty having been given to the aforesaid Ebenezer Temple and to his son William Temple to git stone in the said quarry for their own use should they require them as stipulated in the deed from said Ebenezer Temple to Thomas Trevor and in the deed from the said Trevor to the said Seth Hunt." ............................................................................................................................. CENSUS INFORMATION for William TEMPLE ............................................................................................................................. 1820 Woodford, Bennington Co, VT (M33, Roll 126, pl 114A) William (age 26 to 45), his wife (age 16 to 26) with three children: one son under 10 yrs, one son between 10 and 16, and one daughter under 10. ............................................................................................................................. 1830 Woodford, Bennington Co, VT (M19, Roll 184, p. 76) The National Archives identification of this film is for Shaftsbury, VT, but the page clearly says Woodford. William (30 to 40 yrs) and his wife (30 to 40 years) are shown with six other people living in the household: one son under 5 yrs, two males 20 to 30 yrs old, two daughters 5 to 10 years old, and one daughter 10 to 16 years old. In both 1820 and 1830, William is enumerated next to his father, Ebenezer Temple. Ebenezer's Revolutionary War pension records show one of the heirs as William Temple. ............................................................................................................................. William Temple moved from Vermont to New York sometime between 1830 and 1833. He is listed in the 1830 census for Woodford, Bennington Co, VT. His son William E. Temple was born in 1833 in Georgetown, Madison Co, New York (per his Civil War pension record -- need look up Natl. Arch. film # which we used). Also, William E. Temple's birthdate (May 6, 1833) and birthplace (Madison Co, N.Y.) are listed in The History of Will County, Illinois (Chicago: Wm. LeBaron, Jr., & Co., 186 Dearborn Street, 1878), p. 904 1840 U.S.Census for Georgetown, Madison Co, NY (M704, Roll 295, p. 228) shows William (40 to 49 yrs), his wife 40 to 49 yrs) with seven children: one boy (0 to 4 yrs), one boy (5 to 9 yrs), one boy (10 to 14 yrs), 1 girl (0 to 4 yrs), one girl (5 to 9 yrs), one girl (10 to 14 yrs) and one girl (15 to 19 yrs). ............................................................................................................................. We have yet to find William TEMPLE in the 1850 census. We've looked in the indexes for NY, IL and VT. William's wife, Cynthia (FIELDS) TEMPLE died 15 October 1845. The younger children are all shown with various relatives in the 1850 census. ............................................................................................................................. William's daughter Sarah (TEMPLE) DOUGLASS was widowed in 1851 and (per family records) moved with two of her three children to Will Co, IL, in 1859. William's son Ira had moved there before 1850, as shown by the U.S. Census for Wilton, Will Co, IL (M432, Roll 133, p.92). We have yet to find William's son, William E. Temple, in the 1860 U.S. Census, however, he did enroll as a 16-year-old in the Union Army of the Civil War on 30 July 1862 at Wilton, WillCo, IL (per his Civil War pension records). Also, after the war, William E. TEMPLE returned to Will Co, IL. He is enumerated with his family in Wilton, Will Co, IL in the 1870 census (M593, Roll 292, p. 554). We believe that William TEMPLE probably came to Will Co, IL, with his adult children. There is a William "Kempel", age 64, born in Massachusetts, listed in the 1860 Wilton, Will Co, IL census (M653, Roll 238, p. 159). Enumerated with him is 8 year old James Douglass born in NY. Our William Temple should have been 67, and his grandson, James Douglass, would have been 13. The 1860 U.S. Census for Wesley, Will Co, IL, lists Ira KEMPILL (45 b. VT), Sarah KEMPILL (34 b. VT), James KEMPILL (12 b. NY) and Lucinda DOUGLAS (11 b. NY). Ira's last name should be spelled: TEMPLE. Sarah's surname and that of her son James should have been listed as DOUGLASS. Fortunately, the census taker got Lucinda's name close to correct. That's how we found the family. The same person, John H. Quinn, took the census for both Wesley and Wilton, Will Co, IL on the same day. He may have known that William and Ira were part of the same family. James could have been visiting his grandfather and that's how he got enumerated in 2 places. We feel quite comfortable saying that William KEMPEL is our William TEMPLE. ............................................................................................................................. The 1870 U.S. Census for Spring Valley, Fillmore Co, MN (T132, Roll 3, p. 63) shows Christopher TEMPLE (33 b. NY) with his wife and two children as well as William TEMPLE (77 b. VT).
