Note: N7 Gertie was born in Milwaukee and went to the tenth grade in school. Her middle names apparently derived from her father’s sister, Bertha, and her mother’s sister, Louisa. She went to work at the Weinbrenner Shoe Factory, where she met Herman. They were married on the day before her 19th birthday. She had three children. She had rheumatic fever at the age of ten, which left her with a defective mitral valve, and she was always ill. She died of a massive stroke while she was talking to Doris, who was hanging wash in the yard. Two years after her death, the doctor in Milwaukee sent a clipping saying that open heart surgery had been performed in San Diego, and this was the type of operation that perhaps could have saved or extended Gertie’s life.
