a. Note:   N22 Immigrated with his parents in 1870 - his father died seven years later. He was naturalized in 1880. Various occupations are listed: 1880 Census, worked in a printing office; 1891 on his marriage registration, a journalist ; 1900 census, collector for newspaper: 1910 census, journalist; 1920 census, weigher for the Chamber of Commerce. If he lived in Burlington while a journalist, he may have worked for Der Standard-Demokrat, the German language newspaper published in Burlington, Racine County, between 1896 and 1911. He lived in Burlington for a while, and then apparently moved to Milwaukee after his marriage. His mother lived with his family in her later years. He became a prolific writer - wrote poetry and had some poems published. Married and had seven children, five living to adulthood. Developed adult onset diabetes later in life - his son, Arthur, remembers him having to measure all of his food before eating, as there were no medications for diabetes at that time.
