Note: , which is located about 26 km east of Poznan in what is now Poland. Poznan is located about halfway between Warsaw and the border of Poland with Germany. In 1790, this area of Poland becanme part of Prussia, and did not revert back to Poland until 1918. The location of Siedlec is attached to the Multimedia Components of Michael Zadow. Michael and Anna Marianna Zadow lived in the part of the village known as Siedlec Hauland (it now has the Polish name Siedleczek). There were seven known children in this family, and they were baptised in the Catholic Church at Siedlec, even though the church records clearly stated that the religion of the family was Evangelical Lutheran. The entries in the church book are written in Latin, and the Polish forms of some names are used. For example, Zadow is written as Caudo. The details of the seven children are as follows: Anna Cristina, born late 1786, died 2/4/1802 Anna Elisabeth, baptised 3/5/1792 Anna Dorothea, born 9/9/1795 Andreas, born 16/11/1798 Desgratus (Gottfried), born 29/1/1802 Marianna, born 9/4/1805, died 9/5/1805 Johann, born 1/3/1808 No further information was found in any records for the daughter Anna Elisabeth. It was assumed that the son baptised as Desgratus changed his name to Gottfried, as all details correspond to the son known by that name. The Church books for the Evangelical church at Swarzedz contain all the later information about the Zadow family. The records kept at this church covered a large geographical area, which included Siedlec. The books are now kept at the Archives in the city of Poznan. Michael Zadow whio was a farmer at Siedlec Hautland died on 15/3/1818 aged 67 years, and is buried in the local cemetery. Michale's wife, Anna Marianna Zadow (nee Zilm) died at Siedlec Hausland at the age of 70 years. Shwe was the daughter of Christof and Eva Zilm, who were farnmers at Barczyzna Ollydry ( near Nekla). No information could be obtained about the parents of Michael Zadow. The marriages of Andreas, Anna Dorothea and Johann are recorded in the church books. Andreas married Anna Elisabeth Schmidt, daughter of the farmer George Schmidt, on 16 November, 1823. George Schmidt who lived in Siedlec Hauland had died some time before 1823. Anna Dorothea married a widower Gottleib Pomrenke who was a farmer in Barczyzna Hauland on 3 March, 1823. On 27 November 1836 in Wrzesnia, Johann married Anna Justine Pomrenke, daughter of the deceased Gottlieb Pomrenke and his wife Anna Susanna (nee Terk), who had also died earlier, Through marriage, Johann's sister Anna Dorothea was the step-mother of his wife, Anna Justine. There is no record in the church books of the marriage of Gottfried, but this probably took place at nearby Nekla Hauland where the church records have been lost. Gottfried and his gfamily lived in Nekla Hausland, and records show they owned a house there. Records in Australia show that his wife was Anna Susanna Kuhn (Kiehn). Andreas, Johann and Gottfried were in close contact with each other because at the baptism of a daughter of Andreas, the godparents were Johann Zadow, his wife Anna Justine, and Anna Susanna Zadow ( born Kuhn). Anna Dorothea's husband Gottlieb died some time prior to 1836, as by then she was remarried to Chrisoph Frier. Christof Frier died at some time before 1855, because Anna Dorothea was a widow when she migrated to Australia. The births and baptisms of all of the children of Andreas and Elisabeth Zadow are in the church books, as well as the deaths of two of the children. There is no information about the children of Gottfried ( who lived in nekla Hauland) or of Johann ( who lived in Barczyzna). There is Evidence that the baptisms of Johann's children were recorded in the book kept at te Evangelical church at Wrzesnia, but this book cannot be located. In October 1946, Gottfried Zadow and his family departed from Bremen on the ship "Heloise" and arrived in Port Adelaide in March 1847. The family lived at Neudorf, whcih was close to Lobethal, before moving to Birdwood. There is anecdotal evidence that Andreas Zadow was forced to move from his home in Siedlec Hausland because of revolutionary uprisings. In 1847 he emigrated to Austrralia on the ship "Herman van Beckerath" whcih sailed from Bremen in July 1847, and arrived in Port Adelaide in December 1847. In 1855, Johann Zadow and his family came to Australia, and he was accdompanied by his sister Anna Dorothea who was by then a widow. They travelled on the "Steinwarder" whcih departed Hamburg in August 1855 and arrived in Port Adelaide in December 1855. the family lived in Birdwood on their arrival, and later moved to the Palmer area. THE EARLY DAYS IN AUSTRALIA Gottfried Zadow, his wife Anna Susanna, and his three sons, Johann Ludwig, Freifrich and Christof departed from Bremen on 12/10/1846 On 25/10/1846, when the "Heloise" was sailing in the English Channel between Dover and Claias, Anna Susanna gave birth to thier daughter Hermine Maria. On his arrival In Australia, Gottfried settled in Neudorf, whcih is about 3km from Lobethal, and leased land. In 1850, the twins Auguste Albertine and August Gotthard were born. At some time in the period 1850 to 1855, Gottfried and his familyu moved to Birdwood where they leased land. In 1855, the youngest son, Julius was born at Birdwood. One of the god-parents listed in the church records of the baptism was Ludwig Zadow, and it was stated that he was the nephew of the father of the baby As Ludwig was the son of Andreas Zadow, this is proof that Andreas and Gottfried were brothers. Anna Susanna died from scarlet fever at the age of 52 years, and was buried in Birdwood Lutheran cemetary. Her grave is unmarked and the exact location is not known. In 1869, Gottfired purchased 217 acres of land in the Palmer district. Gottfried's son Freidrich moved to Summerfield in 1870 after his marriage, but it is not known when Gottfried moved to the area. Gottfried was care for by his son Friedrioch and his family until his death on 13/10/1888 at age 86. He was buried in hte Palmer cemetery on 15/10/1888, and his grave is marked by a headstone. Andreas Zadow, his wife Anna Elizabeth, and their eight surviving children, their son-in-law and grandson arrived in Port Adelaide in December 1847. Andreas' eldest daughter Anna Louise had married Gottfried Zucht in Prussia and they had a one year old son, Ludwig.
Note: The story of the Zadow family in Australia has its beginnings in ths small village of Siedlec
