Notes
a. Note:   Hermann Otto is said to have originated the St. Paul Waltz along with his father and was partly responsible for beginning what later became the St. Paul Orchestra. While this has not been verified, someone said that they had seen the original scores of music, although another cousin had said someone else is officially credited with authorship of the St. Paul Waltz. At any rate, I think it's safe to assume that they were among the first to have played the St. Paul Waltz and had the first band in the St. Paul area. Herman Otto and his brother Gustave Otto fought in the Civil War for the Union Army, Germany unit, "Company A, Minnesota Brackett's Cavalry Battalion". Herman was age 20 at induction 7 Oct 1861 and was discharged 28 Oct 1864. He was a Private and listed his home as St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota. Family lore states that he was a bugler. Articles in the St. Paul Pioneer Press from that time verified that Herman was involved in the Battle at Obion River, near Lebanon, TN. The battle was considered a minor skirmish. To summarize the battle; a detachment of 125 men, 36 from Brackett's Batallion (including Herman Otto), under the command of Maj Charles Schaeffer Von Boernstein, had made camp and were eating supper just before sundown. The pickets came rushing in to camp with the cry "the rebels are on us". The 2 articles state that there were at least 1200 men under the command of Col. Clayborn. The outnumbered union sodiers were chased up to 20 miles, 96 union soldiers were captured, missing, wounded, or killed. Major Von Bornstein was one of the casualties. The confederate soldiers had no casualties or wounded. Hermann Otto escaped unharmed. Hermann was transferred to the 4th Michigan Cavalry January 7, 1864. The 4th Michigan was in Tennessee the entire time that Hermann was assigned to them and were involved in several battles possibly including Dandridge, Columbia, and Fair Garden. In April of 1864 the 4th Michigan marched to Georgia, they later were given partial credit for the capture of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Hermann returned to Brackett's Cavalry Batallion in April. From April 21st to October 28, 1864 he was back with Brackett's Batallion serving detached duty at Fort Snelling. He was discharged October 28. Brackett's Battalion, also known as 1st MN Light Cavalry, Co G Curtis Horse Cavalry, and Co G 5th Reg't Iowa Cavalry, fought in the following battles: Battle at Obion River, Tennessee on 05 May 1862 (present) Battle on 23 July 1864 (status unknown) Battle at Ta-Ha-Kouty, Dakota Territory on 28 July 1864 (not present, was on a detachment at Fort Snelling) Battle at Fort Rice, Dakota Territory on 27 August 1865 (had been discharged) Hermann later collected a pension for rheumatism and back problems. One of his later affidavits stated that he had never been paid a $100 bounty owed to him. The discharge papers confirmed that he was owed the bounty at the time of discharge. His pension was discontinued at the time of his death, the final payment of $12 was made Oct 4, 1911. After the war, he returned to St. Paul. He married Elizabeth Schulte in St. Paul in 1868. They had 10 children in St. Paul before moving near Cedar Mills - Brookfield Twp, Renville, MN. There he farmed and formed the Cedar Mills String Band along with his sons.
