He had lost the other eye while doing some blacksmith work, hitting an anvil. John was a good Horseman, breaking in all of his own horses. John also liked music. He and his son George used to play for barn dances and parties. John also enjoyed fishing and throwing horseshoes and hunting pheasants and prairie chickens. In his later years he would have his grandson, Gordy, drive him into Cedar Mills for a drink and his Beech Nut tobacco and a good talk with his friends.
