Note: Charlie Larson believes that Charles Hartmann shoed the horses of members of the Jessie James gang before they robbed Norwood, Minnesota. He said that he had shoed the horses backwards. After robbing Norwood, the posse followed them out of town the wrong way! He also said that he had heard some of the farmers near Cedar Mills found money in their mailboxes after the robbery. Charlie related a story his grandmother Hulda, Carl's daughter, had told him. Carl's wife had died young. Sometimes they would get a knock on the door in the middle of the night. Her father would leave for days or weeks at a time, the children fending for themselves! Shelly Eggert related that there were once letters that perhaps indicated an affiliation with the James Gang. Believe she had heard this from her uncle, Leslie Hartman. Leslie had found the letters and his dad, George had burned them in the fireplace, as this was not something considered acceptable. Leslie had also related to her that as a child, while with his grandfather, men would ride up and he would be told to hide under the bed. His grandfather would often ride off with the men. [note the above is here say, no records have been located to substantiate the above] There is also information on John and Johanna Hartmann, 1875 Hutchinson Twp, age 42 (4 yrs younger than Carl), maybe Carl's brother. Also marriage record at Immanuel and baptisms of their children. A John Hartman was a witness at Carl Hartman's wedding. *The following are transcriptions of Civil War records received from the National Archives in Washington, DC.
