Notes
a. Note:   #9 1883 January 31 South Mountain Dear Cousin I now sit down to answere your letter that we received today with thirteen dollars in it. Your money is as good as ours here. Mr. Gragrey was in the postoffice when I got the letter and I reached him the money. We have had some cold weather since you left. It is soft here now. Your friends is all well. Magey Louks have got a young son a very purty baby and she is smart and up round today. She have settled with Storeys for one hundred dollars and she had to pay all the costs. Tha lawyer charged thirty dollars and John Dunkin charged fifteen dollars for what little he done and five for the doctor and twenty-five to Niles for five months board. That left her twenty-five dollars for herself. She could not get anything from Storey according to law. She would have to pay seventy five dollars to enter a suit in Cornwall against him and all she could get was a judgement against him and if he never is worth anything she could get nothing. She is keeping the baby. We have to build a house for Mother in the spring. She cannot get staying any longer than March where she is. I think we will build it at William Ellises. It will be hard for you to read this. My pen will not write and we were all at a dance till four oclock this morning. So you may know that I cannot see very well and my arm is tired with fiddling. The dance was at James Grimes. There is neither marriages nor deaths round her since you left. We told Megey Louks that she could come and stay here for awhile and save paying for her board. We have no more news to send at this time so good by.
