a. Note:   John Peter Zehler, known throughout his adult life as Charles, came to America with his parents in 1856. In 1865 he married Mary Backe. They initially settled in Bennington, but later moved to Sheldon where Charles pursued farming. After retiring, Charles moved to Warsaw, where he celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary in 1815; a picture of nearly the entire family taken at this celebration survives. Mary Zehler died in 1926 and Charles lived on until 1933, to the age of 90.
