a. Note:   Obituary: B. F. Kelley died at his home in Navasota, Tex., March 25, 1914, seventy-one years old. He was a veteran of the War of the States, having in 1861 enlisted at Navasota in Company G, 4th Texas Infantry, Hood's Texas Brigade, in which he served from the beginning to the end of the war. He was wounded several times; was captured at Gettysburg and carried to Fort Delaware, from which place he made his escape by swimming across Delaware Bay, a distance five miles. He was in the surrender with General Lee at Appomattox. He then returned to his home in Texas. A wife and ten children are left to mourn his death. Several of his old comrades in arms were his pallbearers. Of the one hundred and fifty members of Company G, only about ten are left.[1709606.ged] Franklin Kelley was born in in Macon,Georgia 18 March 1843 and moved with his f amily to Texas when about 2 years old.The family first located in Wharton,Texa s from which place they moved to Grimes County in 1849.When the Civil War began Franklin was attending Soule University at Chapel Hill.He quit school and with other young men of Grimes County joined Company G,4TH Texas Regiment. We have a letter that Franklin wrote to his mother, dated 16 Oct. 1861 on Confederate army stationary.Ben is writing about there march into Richmond and expected to march into Washington.Letter discusses march through New Orleans. Franklin app lied for Civil War 'Soldier's Application for a Pension',20 August 1913 (Appli cation 22277)when he was 70 years of age,he said he had lived in Texas about 67 years.Franklin reported his occupation as carpenter.He said he served 4 years in army to about 9 April 1865.He reported that he was a member of Company G 4th Texas Infantry,Army of Virginia.Frank's obituary(Navasota Newspaper week of 25 March 1914) says that he was with Capt.Hutchinson's Co.G made up of largely of the best young men of Grimes Co. which took its place in Hood's Fourth Texas R egiment and that he served with this unit the whole of the Civil War.Franklin's obituary says that he was wounded a number of times and captured twice,finally was among the faithful and rugged number that surrendered with General Lee at Appomatox in April 1865.He returned home in June 1865 and in October ,was marri ed to Miss Mahala Ann Lindley.
