  3. Military: Did not speak of the war when he came home. despised the Japanese, who was his enemy in the war. However, in the early 1970s he did tell his daughter Pam about the happenings when his ship was sunk. He had to go up the ladders to get out the belly of the ship, stepping over bodies of men who died. These men did not cover the noses/mouths with a wet cloth to avoid inhaling smoke so died of smoke inhalation while trying to flee the ship. When the men were in the water waiting to be picked up by another ship they formed human rings to stay together. There were sharks in the water and he told of at least one man losing his legs to a shark. They had to stay perfectly still in the water to try and avoid shark attacks.
