Notes
a. Note:   ldest son, George died 1907) and with my three younger sons. I received the greatest kindness from Mr. and Mrs. Green and family from whom I got the bush, and eventually two of my sons married two of their daughters, and very fine and capable women they were, making excellent wives for Sam and Will, who by this time where settled down to bush life. I may here state that both these sons were educated and were schoolteachers in Canterbury when they left to join me at this mill. 1 never had any worry or anxiety about my daughters, who with a good Mother's help and management fought their own battles and made names for themselves in their own particular lines of business. Two daughters, Eve (Eva) and Alice took up the study of medicine and reached the top of the tree, distinguishing themselves as Doctors in England. Another, Christine, who went to Edinburgh with her two sisters made a business in that city, a Vegetarian Cafe, and made a wonderful success of the undertaking. Marion took up school teaching and, as I have already mentioned, was the first teacher in the school built on the very spot at Kakahu where I pitched the tent for Campbell's two sisters who landed in Lyttleton at that time; Campbell going to meet them while I fixed up tent accommodation. Our son Charles is the High School teacher in Cambridge. I had almost overlooked John if last by no means least. MY eldest son George, my pal of long ago, died at the age of forty seven leaving a family of five, one son and four daughters. Jessie married Mr. Kennedy of Stratford and her son is farming in the Taranaki district, who married a daughter of the late Mr. James Craigie of Timaru. My eldest daughter Kate (Mrs. Butcher) of Waimate is the one we are now living with and with whom we hope to end our days, - a good and devoted daughter she has proved to be. God bless her for all her goodness to her parents, as he surely will. George was a Saw Miller and a Quarryman.
