Timaru Herald Wednesday June 14 1941 Page 6 Fitting Tribute Late Mr C E Hooper Ambulance Brigade Superintendant. Fitting tribute to the long and valued service of Mr Charles Edwin Hooper Corps superintendant of the St. John Ambulance Brigade who died suddenly last week was paid at the interment at the Timaru Cemetery on Sunday, when member of the Mens Division, Nursing Division, Senior Ambulance and Nursing Cadets of the brigade assembled at the corner of the Park Avenue and marched with the cortege to the cemetry where they formed a guard of honour. A wreath in the form of a St John's cross lay on the coffin and the following members of the Brigade were the bearers: Messrs H A Toneycliffe, A Chapman, J McNamara, G Hutt, T H Innes and W Aitkin. The Rev L A Barnes officiated at the graveside. Mr Hooper was a member of the Caledonian Lodge No 16 and the Masonic Service was conducted by the WM Bro R A McKessar. Mr Hooper was one of the foundation members of the St John Ambulance Brigade in Timaru and with Messrs Toneycliffe (now District Supereintendant) and W Smith (a former District Superintendant) was responsible for the transport section. There was no permanent driver in those days, and it was customary for them to convey invalid patients to hospital after they had finished there work. In accident cases they were called from their work to attend to the transport of injured persons to hospital. Mr Hooper and his first wife, who died 3 years ago, were very active in promoting various entertainments, as a result of which the funds of the Brigade were assisted. He gave long and valued service in attending race meetings and other functions where the services of ambulance officers were likely to be required. After acting for some years as Divisional Superintendant, Mr Hooper was promoted to Corps Superintendant an office he occupied at the time of his death. In 1937 with Mr Toneycliffe, he shared the honour of investiture as an Honorary Serving Brother of the Order of St John, a rank which is only awarded in cases of long and meritous service. Mr Hooper re married and is survived by his widow. There is one son Mr H Hooper, and five daughters Mesdames T Bower ( Fairlie), W Cormack (Timaru) S Townley (Nightcaps) and Miss Margaret Hooper by the first marriage.
