Notes
a. Note:   (per Jackie Hayes) There was a little boy - 3 year old Jivo Zazada (two z's - no s) died May 20, 1899. He cannot be Pauline's child. She told the enumerator that she'd had three children, they were all alive and living with her. The odds are pretty good that this is Frank & Frances little boy. We know that Frances had lost a baby before 1900. This little boy was born 1895-96. If you look at the 1900 census there is a big gap in time between Katherina Zasada b. 1893 and Celina/Helen Zasada b. 1898. Little Jivo would fit in well. (per St. Casimir baptismal records) Joannes was born 7-3-1896, baptized 7-12-1896. Godparents were Adalbertus Wojtkowiak / Maria Lewandowska. (per Jackie Hayes) If I am correct, Maria is the wife of Valentine Lewandowski. He stood as godfather to Mary Zasada in 1899, three years after Jivo's birth and death. I have the 1910 census for Valentine & Maryanna Lewandowski. They were in Thornton Twp, IL on State Line St. They'd been married for 24 years so she would have had the Lewandowski name in 1896. Also, since the youngest four kids were born in Indiana (bet. 1891-1907) we know they were in the right area. Both Jivo and Mary were born when the Zasadas were living in Hammond, IN. I could not find any early trace of Godfather Adalbertus Wojtkowiak's family with a connection to either Thornton Twp or Hammond, IN. However, I did stumble onto some other things that confirm that a family with that name had been in the area in the 1930s. I have an obituary for a Walter Joseph Wojtkowiak who died in Nevada in June of last year. In the 1994 Phone & Address Dir. on Ancestry that is a Walter Wojtkowiak listed at 124 155th Place, Calumet City, IL (708)862-4276 and a Walter J. Wojtkowiak with a P.O. Box in Reno NV. Here is a pasting of important parts of the obit. "Walter Joseph Wojtkowiak, 67, passed away June 21, 2003 at Washoe Medical Center after an intense battle with cancer. Walter was born July 26, 1935 to Walter and Mary (Czlonka) Wojtkowiak in Hammond, Indiana" There was a John & Helen Wojtkowiak with a four year old daughter Marion living on 155th St in Calumet City in 1930. John was 32, born in Poland but according to the census he immigrated in 1912. That would put him out of the running to be somehow connected to Adalbert Wojtkowiak who was around in 1896. I ran the name Walter Wojtkowiak I hit on a fairly young man living in Valparaiso, Porter County, IN. this man was 29 and born in Illinois. This puts him in the general area around 1900. That's good. His wife, though, is named Valera (not Mary) and she is from Poland. She is 32 and came over in 1914. It seems that they've been married for about 9 years and have two boys - Robert, age 5 and a newborn son, Daniel. Both boys were born in IN. This couple would be young enough to have additional children during the 1930s. I'm just not sure if this is the right group, though. I found both a Robert & a Daniel on the Michigan Deaths Index (1971-1996) with ages that match up nice. They both died in Alpena, MI. I actually found an Albert Wojtkowiak, b.c. 1882 in Posen, living in Camden, NJ in 1920. The only two families with that name in IL were in Chicago. I looked at both IL families and neither one had a boy named Walter. But, going back to the NJ connection, I had found the Walter & Valera Wojtkowiak family in Valparaiso in 1930. On that same census page was a Katherine Wojtkowiak, age 65, widowed, born in Poland, imm. 1895. She was living with her daughter & son-in-law, Frank & Mary Kamiski. He is 45, she is 35 and they've been married for 20 years. He was born in IL but she was born in NJ. Isn't that strange? I have it figured she must have been born right around the time her mother got to America. Frank & Mary had a number of kids, the oldest being born in IL and the rest in IN. This is probably nothing but it just struck me as something to jot down and tuck away. Who knows.
