a. Note:   N758 4th/8th Earl of Hereford, 9th Earl of Essex. He was also baron of Kington, Herefordshire; and lord of half the barony of Trowbridge, Wiltshire. He had livery of his father�s lands February 16, 1298. He was hereditary lord high constable of England. He served in Scotland and was present at the siege of Caraverock on July 1, 1300. He took part in the proceedings leading up to the appointment of the lords ordainers in 1310, of whom he was one. Having been deprived of the constableship, he was restored on August 28, 1311. He assisted toward the summary execution of Piers de Gaveston in 1312, for whichwith others he was pardoned on October 16, 1313. He fought at Bannockburn and was taken prisoner at Bothwell. He was exhanged for Elizabeth de Burgh, wife of Robert de Brus, King of Scotland. He joined the rebellion against King Edward II and was slain at Boroughbridge.
