a. Note:   N760 3rd/7th Earl of Hereford, 8th Earl of Essex. He inherited from his grandfather. He was also baron of Pleshey, Essex; and baron of Kington, Herefordshire. He was hereditary lord high constable of England. He was present when judgment was given against Llywellyn on November 12, 1276; and on November 17 he was on the King�s service in the Marches of Wales. In 1289 he fought against the earl of Gloucester over the boundaries of their respective lands. At the so-called Parliament at Salisbury on February 24, 1296/97, occurred the famous passage between the King and the earls of Norfolk and Hereford, when the King was defied, the two earls, one as marshal and one as constable, refusing to do service in Gascony unless the King was present. They were deprived of their offices, but the came to London and practically dictated terms.
