Notes
a. Note:   N766 1st/5th Earl of Hereford. He was created earl by King John I on April 28, 1200, the first of the Bohuns to have this title. He inherited through his grandmother, Margery of Gloucester, the estates of the earls of Hereford. The office of lord high constable of England he inherited from his father. He was one of the leaders of the barons who forced King John to sign the Magna Carta, and he was one of the twenty-five sureties, in 1215. His lands had been sequestered, but they were restored at the signing of the Magna Carta, at Runnymede. He was subsequently excommunicated by the Pope, and did not return to his allegiance on the death of King John, but was one of the commanders in the army of Louis le Dauphin, at the battle of Lincoln on May 20, 1217, the first year of Henry III's reign. He was taken prisoner by William Marshal during the battle. After this defeat he joined Saire de Quincy and other Magna Carta barons in a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in June, 1220, and died en route.
