Note: N1029 He is known as Humphrey the Old or Humphrey with the Beard. He was godfather of William the Conqueror and closely associated with that family. Despite his relatively advanced age in 1066, he probably participated in the battle of Hastings. He is mentioned in the Domesday Book as lord of Taterford in Norfolk, and obtained considerable wealth from the spoils of the Conquest.
