Notes
a. Note:   N1206 Earl of Northampton, Hereford, and Essex. He succeeded his father as earl of Northampton on September 16, 1370, and his uncle as earl of Hereford and Essex and constable of England on October 15, 1361. He was hereditary constable of England and a Knight of the Garter about 1365. The King took his homage on May 5, 1363, and he had restoration of his fathers lands. He was with John, duke of Lancaster, in France. He appears to have been ill or under a cloud during the last period of his life, not impossibly connected with the inglorious efforts of the duke of Lancaster in France. It was even hinted that he was hung by the Kings orders at night, in connection with the earl of Warwicks death at Calais, as some said, by poison. Certainly he never afterwards appeared, although he was at Pleshey Castle on December 12, 1372, where his will is dated. His lands were taken into the Kings hands after his death. He was buried at the feet of his father, on the north side of the presbytery, in Walden Abbey. His vast estates were divided between his two daughters. Brecknock and the lordships in the Welsh Marches descended through the elder to the family of Stafford. The dukedom of Hereford became merged in the Crown on the accession of Henry IV, who had married Humphrey's younger daughter Mary.
