Already serving in India in August 1914, he proceeded to France in October, and was wounded at La Bassee in the following month. He was sent to hospital at Boulogne and later at Gravesend. Returning to the Western Front in March 1915, he was again wounded at Serre in October and a third time at Beaumont - Hamel in July 1916, when having sustained the loss of a leg, he lay for eight days before being discovered.
