Note: Obituary from the Harlan County Journal: OBITUARY Elbert Washington Mathes Elbert Washington Mathes, son of James and Mary Mathes, was born October 17, 1870 in Carthage, Missouri. At the age of fourteen he became a member of the United Brethren Church in Missouri. With his parents he moved to Kansas when he was about twenty-one years of age. On January 12, 1901 he was united in marriage to Ethlen Murphy. To this union nine children were born. His lifes work consisted mainly in farming. He has lived the past few years with a daughter, Mrs. Hattie Lambson, Orleans, Nebraska. He passed away January 31, 1959 at the age of 88 years, 3 months, and 16 days. His wife Ethlen passed away in 1940 and six children also preceded him in death. Francis Lee Mathes, Thursy Ruth Mathes, Adaline Hardie, Nyal Mathes, Bernice Mathes and one son was killed while serving in the armed forces, LeRoy Mathes. He leaves to mourn his passing three daughters, Mrs. Hattie Lambson, Orleans, Nebraska; Mrs. Lois Dow of Alma, Nebraska and Mrs. Della Lowry of Chiloquin, Oregon; 12 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends. Services were held at the Mitchell Funeral Home, Monday, February 2, 1959 at 2 p.m.with Rev. Ellis J. Votaw, pastor of the First Christian church, Alma, Nebraska, officiating. The Mitchell Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. The music "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "Abide With Me" was sung by Mrs. Clara Jones and Mrs. Mary Waldo accompanied by Mrs. K. C. McGrew. The pallbearers were Tom Oldham, Leon Roberts, Ernie Kuhl, Don Rodenbaugh, Merle Davenport and Ross Andres. Interment was in the Alma Cemetery.
