Note: From the Harlan County Journal, July 10, 1941: MRS. ETHEL MATHES GARDNER PASSED AWAY MONDAY Mrs. Ethel Mathes Gardner passed Monday evening at Benkleman, following a prolonged illness. Mrs. Gardner was the mother of Mrs. Glen Dow and Mrs. Earling Lmbson of Alma. Funeral sevices will be held at the Christian church in Alma on Thursday, July 10th, at 10:30 a.m. An obituary will be published next week. ----------------------------------------------- From the Harlan County Journal, July 17, 1941: OBITUARY Mrs. Ethlen Mathes Gardner Miss Ethlen Florence Murphy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Murphy, was born June 7, 1881 in Norton County, Kansas. She departed this life at her home in Benkelman, Nebraska, at the age of sixty years and one month. Miss Ethlen Murphy spent the early part of her life in the vicinity of her birth. As a young woman she became a member of the Dunkard church in the winter of 1899. Later, in 1909 she removed her membership to the United Brethern church. On January 12, 1901 she was married to Mr. E. W. Mathes. To this union were born nine children, five of whom are living and are as follows: Mrs. Hattie Lambson, and Mrs. Lois Dow, Alma, Nebraska; Mrs. Adeline Hardie, and Mrs. Della Lowry, Macksville, Kansas, and Elbert Leroy of Alma. Those who preceded their mother in death in infancy or in early youth are: Wanda Bernice, Thursday Ruth, Francis Lee, and Nile Benton. There are eleven grandchildren. In 1917 they moved to Alma where they resided until 1922. In that year they moved to Benkelman where she lived until her death. Besides the immediate family she leaves to mourn her passing three sisters and four brothers; Mrs. Lois Copeland, Colorado Springs, Colorado; Mrs. Essie Bradshaw, Kansas City, Mo.; Mrs. Olie Wicker of Norton, Kansas; Mrs. Harry Murphy, and Mr. Fay Murphy, Oberlin, Kansas; Mr. Gerald Murphy and Mr. Glen Murphy of Norton, Kansas. She was an industrious worker, unselfish in life and dearly loved by her children and all who knew her. Funeral services were held at the Alma Christian church in Alma, Thursday, July 10th, at 10:30 a.m. Interment was in the Alma cemetery.
