Obituary from the Harlan County Journal, June 6, 1986: NETA HAAS Mrs. Neta Faye Dow Haas born one of three children to Frank and Nora Myers Dow on October 18, 1897 at Alma, Nebraska. She departed this life early Saturday morning, May 31, 1986, while a patient at the Harlan County Hospital in Alma, Neb., at the age of 88 years, seven months, and 13 days. Neta grew to womanhood in the Alma community where she also attended schools. Neta worked for a time at a clothing store at Cedar Bluffs, Ia., later returning to Alma where she began a courtship with Andrew Haas, known by most as "Andy." After their courtship, Neta was united in marriage to "Andy" Haas on October 21, 1917 at Alma, Neb. To this union one son, Emmett, was born. The Haas family made their home at Alma until moving to Ludell, Kan., where "Andy" was employed by the Rock Island Railroad. The family then moved to Goodland and Norton, Kan., and then to Limon, Colo., returning to Alma in 1932. Andy worked for a time for the Coffee Transfer, owned by Tom Coffey. He later owned and operated the Tri-County Gasoline Transfer. This was operated as a partnership with "Pink" lueking. After sustaining an injury he eventually sold the business and then worked doing books for several local businesses. Andy preceded Neta in death on November 16, 1972. Neta had been a member of the First Christian Church and the C.W.F. of Alma, the Heap of Livin' Club and the Alma Women's Club. She was also very active in the Alma Senior Center and was also a real encouragement to others at the Center. She had stated that she would never have been able to stay in her own home as long as she did if it hadn't been for the Center. Neta had been a patient at the Harlan County Hospital since December of last year. In addition to her husband, Neta was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Glen Dow in 1965; one sister, Naomi Dow, at the age of seven in 1911; and a step-father, Sam Seckman.
