a. Note:   News article and obituary from the Harlan County Journal, July 23, 1959: Samuel Seckman, Fatally Stricken Wednesday Samuel G. Seckman, a resident of this city for more than forty-three years, died suddenly shortly after the noon hour Wednesday, the result of a heart attack. His death came as a shock to members of his family, as well as the host of friends in this community. At the time he was fatally stricken, Mr. Seckman was in the process of trimming some trees at his home in northwest Alma. He had climbed some distance into a tree, but apparently felt the attack coming on as he had descended to a crotch of the tree where he was found by neighbors passing by the home. Born at Mount Sterling, Illinois, Mr. Seckman attended school at nearby Fowler, Illinois, where he grew to young manhood. He entered the employ of the Burlington railroad on November 1, 1911 at East Dubuque, Illinois and was transferred to Alma on March 1, 1916 as Division Lineman for the Burlington. Mr. Seckman was a faithful and highly respected employ of the company until his retirement July 1, 1956 after forty-five years of service. Throughout the years his division was classified as one of the finest from a maintenance standpoint on the entire Burlington system. He was noted as an efficient lineman and was most prompt in making repairs in the shortest possible time in spite of the many hazards encountered. Mr. Seckman was held in high esteem by all who knew him, this surely being attested to by the many fellow employees of the Burlington who attended the funeral services in Alma Saturday afternoon to pay their respects to a departed fellow employee. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Nora, a stepdaughter Mrs. Neta Haas and a stepson, Glen Dow, all of Alma, three sisters, Mrs. Nancy Haley and Mrs. Luck Dickhut of Camp Point, Ill., and Mrs Ruth Haubrich of Quincy, Ill., other relatives and a host of friends. On obituary will be found on another page of this issue of the Journal. OBITUARY Samuel G. Seckman Samuel G. Seckman, son of Frank and Sophia Seckman was born June 13, 1891 at Mt. Sterling, Illinois.
