From "Alma: Towards the Year 2000", published in 1992 as part of the Nebraska Quasquicentennial: JOHN MYERS, EARLY SETTLER John Esrom Myers was born Oct. 20, 1850, in Orangeville, Ill. He married Elizabeth T. Schrack in 1855. They had Wilsie A. Myers, born in 1876, Nora Elma, 1878, and Wilbur Guy, 1887. John came to Alma in 1873 and bought 160 acres of land adjoining Alma on the west. The present golf course is part of it. It was some of the first land recorded at the Harlan County Court House. He returned in 1879 with his family and purchased the adjoining 160 acres south of the first land. This extended to the Republican River on the south. He built a home on this land. He never lived there but later his daughter, Nora, who was married to Frank W. Dow, lived there with their three children. In 1897 John Myers build a home on West First Street which is now occupied by a great-grandson, Duane L. Dow. He hauled the lumber for the home from Bloomington. He also built the first three two-story buildings on the north side of Main Street in 1885, called "The Myers Block." They are still standing. One of these buildings is now owned by great-granddaughter, Elma Jean Dow Waggoner of Republican City. Obituary from the March 13, 1925, edition of the Harlan County Journal: ------------------ OBITUARY OF JOHN E. MYERS John Esram Myers was born at Orangeville, Stephenson County, Illinois, October 20, 1850. On December 17, 1854, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Schrack. To this union three children were born, all of whom are living and have been with their father in his last hours of sickness. They are Wilsie A. Myers of Kansas City, Mo.; Nora E. Seckman of Alma and Guy W. Myers of Omaha. Early in his married life he farmed for a short time near Freeport, Ill., and having earlier purchased the land adjoining Alma on the west, he moved into this locality. In 1879 he built the home and in which place he continued to reside until the time of his death on March 7, 1925. Besides the two sons and the daughter, he leaves his wife, who has been a true and steady helpmate throughout their entire married life; two brothers, Isaac M. Myers of Freeport, Illinois; Cooney L. Myers of Bellingham, Washington; one sister, Mrs. Mary Epley of Spencer, Iowa, two grandchildren, Glen Dow of Alma, and Mrs. Andy Haas of Cheyenne Wells, Colorado; and two great grand children; other distant relatives and a host of friends. Among those that came to be with Mr. Myers in his last hours and with the family at the time of burial are Mrs. Elgin, the only remaining sister of Mrs. Myers and Mr. Elgin; Mrs. Rebecca Schrack of Holdrege, Mrs. W. A. Myers of Kansas City; Mrs. Guy W. Myers of Omaha; Mrs. Andy Haas; Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Schrack of Oxford and Irvin Schrack of Denver. John E. Myers was a pioneer in this section. He encountered the trials and hardships of early days and he did his part for the development of the country. He was a man who always held that honesty was the best policy. He stood for a square deal and fairplay. He was reared in a christian home, grew into manhood, and continued thru his later life with a great respect for his Creator. Among the posessions that he prized was a bible from which he familiarized himself with God's everlasting word. The many friends and old settlers who knew him thruout his life in this community will mourn his departure and in their memory will hold his life as a monument of honesty and honor. Mr. Myers was 74 years, 4 months, and 17 days of age when he passed away. Funeral services were held from the Christian church Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Fay Le Meadows and burial was made in the Alma cemetery. The Journal joins a large circle of friends in extending sympathy to the bereaved ones in their hour of trouble. ------------------
