Note: Ray was killed in a car train accident at Smith Center, Kansas along with his cousin Willard Trumbull. It was snowing and their car was hit as they crossed the main street crossing.Ray served in WWI as a driver over in France. Kirwin Kansas newspaper March 14, 1924 Fearful Tragedy. Last Saturday evening at Smith Center, Willard Trumbull was killed and his cousin, Ray Emerson, was so severly injured that he died yesterday morning. The two young men were struck by the east bound Jersey as they were crossing the track on Main Street in an automobile about six o'clock. The body of Willard was terribly mangled and he was killed instantly. Young Emerson did not regain consciousness so no details of the accident will ever be known. A funeral service is being held at Smith Center today and the bodies will be brough here tomorrow and a service held in the Congregation Church. The burial will be in Bogart cemetery. Mr. Trumbull was married a little over eight years ago and leaves a wife and three children. His wife was Miss Iva Jackson. Mr. Emerson was a soldier in the late war and not married.
