Notes
a. Note:   Almost certainly born in Putnam County, IN, as his father bought land from the US Govt and was listed in Indiana at that time. His mother died abt 1836? J.N. Brown is buried in Pilgrim Cemetery, near Elkhart, TX. J.N. Brown's parents were both born in Indiana, as evidenced by the 1920 census. In 1920, J.N. is listed as widowed and his wife would have been born in Kentucky (as evidenced by Sam J. Brown's entry). In the 1910 census, James Brown lists his birth state as Kentucky and his dad having been born in Indiana and his mom in Ireland. Hmm. It also suggests he had been widowed for 60 years. I'm not sure what this means but it could suggest his wife died about 1896. James Brown appears in the 1900 Houston County, TX, census as a widower. His birthplace is listed as Indiana and both parents' as Kentucky. He is living with daughter Emma Strong (widowed and born 7/1875) and his grandson Victor Strong (born 3/1897). He lists his birthday as 2/1831. James N. Brown appears in the 1870 Daviess County, Kentucky, census with wife Mildred A and children Thomas J, Jesse, Annie, and James. Mildred's birthplace is listed as Indiana in this census. James N. Brown appears in the 1880 Daviess County, Kentucky, census with wife Mildred and children Thomas J, Jesse, Annie, James, and Emma. In this census James lists both parents being born in Kentucky and Mildred lists herself born in Kentucky with both parents being born in Virginia. James in the 1850 census with his dad?
