Harry C Furse is in the 1900 Harlan County NE census with wife Bertha W, son Myre D, and Harry's brother Frank. From "Alma: Towards the Year 2000", published in 1992 as part of the Nebraska Quasquicentennial: HARRY AND BERTHA FURSE Harry C. Furse was born in Millwood, Ohio, June 8, 1875, and died in Alma, Nebraska July 31, 1941, at his family home on East Main Street. Harry and his family moved from Ohio to Franklin County, Neb., when he was seven. In 1886 they moved to Alma where his father, Thomas, opened a shoemaker's shop. Harry married Bertha Evelyn Dow on June 8, 1898. Bertha and her family, the Herbert Bush Dows, traveled by covered wagon for six weeks from near Richland Center, Wisc., to settle land in Prairie Dog Township southwest of Alma. Their first home was a "soddy", a home built of blocks of prairie sod. Before her marriage, Bertha taught rural schools near Woodruff, Kan., and Huntley. Seven children were born to this union: Merle Dow (1899-1968), Harry Garold (1902-1983), Ronald Ray (1904-1971), Gershom Thomas (1906-1974), Wesley Dean (1912-1981), Hope (Mrs. Aubrey Carlson) Mt. Pleasant, Michigan (1915 - ), and Herbert Cory Furse, Omaha (1918 - ). Mr. Furse was a newspaper man most of his life, and was owner and editor of the Harlan County Journal from 1904 to 1940. He served as postmaster in Alma two different times. The second time he was appointed by Cong. Shallenberger of Alma during the '30s depression years. During that time some of the sons continued to publish the Journal. Mr. and Mrs. Furse were both active in their church, the Congregational, and in community affairs. Mr. Furse served on the city council and the board of education. Mrs. Furse served as president of her church women's group and of the Alma Woman's Club.
