Note: Served in the US Navy during WWII. Stationed at the Radio Intelligence facility on Adak Island Alaska from Nov. 1944 until Feb. 1946. Recalled as a reservist during 1950 but lobbied his Senator (or Congressman?) to end that assignment. Moved to Wichita, KS, by 1952, Fort Walton Beach FL in 1962, Seattle WA in 1963, Tullahoma TN 1964, Tampa FL 1970, Pensacola FL 1972, Hilliard FL 1974, Winchester TN 1984. Wedding Announcement, source and date unknown: ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Maxine Emerson and John Eldon Dow Wed Miss Maxine Emerson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Emerson of Naponee, and John Eldon Dow, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glen G. Dow of Alma, were united in marriage at Phillipsburg, Kans., on Sunday evening, July 7th. The Rev. McDonald, pastor of the Christian church in that city, presided. The bride attended school at Naponee, graudating from the Naponee high school with the Class of '43. During residence in that community, and also during the past several months that she has spent in this city, she formed a wide circle of friends and is held in high esteem by all who know her. Mr. Dow, who was recently discharged from the Navy, spent nearly three years in the service, 18 months of which was spent in the Aleution Islands. Previous to entering the service he attended the Alma high school and graudated with the class of 1941. The groom is a energetic young man and his friends in this community are legion. The young couple will make their home in Alma, where Mr. Dow is employed at the local post office. -------------------------------------------------------------------- From "Alma: Towards the Year 2000", published in 1992 as part of the Nebraska Quasquicentennial: JOHN E. DOW John E. Dow, "Elden", was the first child born to Glen G. and Lois Dow in Alma in 1924. He graduated from Alma High School in 1941 and attended the University of Nebraska for one semester. He served with the Navy from 1943 to 1946. He married Maxine Emerson of Naponee in 1946 and was a postal employee in Alma at that time. During the Korean War he served in the Aleutian Islands from 1950-1951. They lived in Wichita for a time, where he was employed as an electronic technician for Boeing Aircraft, later moving to Florida. They are now retired in Winchester, Tenn. Maxine is a licensed practical nurse. They have three children, Jan, Joy, and Gary, and two grandsons. Jan was born in 1947 in Holdrege, married Ron Vickery and resides in Jacksonville, Fla. They have one son, Zachary. Jan is a teacher and Ron is an electrical engineer with the Navy. Joy was born in 1948 in Holdrege, married to Mike Webb and lives in Normandy, Tenn. She has one son, Eric, who is 17. Gary was born in 1953 and lives in Plano, Texas, where he is employed by Texas Instruments. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Obituary from the Winchester Herald Chronicle, February 18, 2010 (http://www.heraldchronicle.com/news/obituaries.asp?idcategory=22): DOW, John Elden, age 86 of Winchester, passed away on Monday, Feb. 15, 2010 at his residence. He was born in Alma, NE the son of Lois and Glen Dow. Mr. Dow was an Electronics Tech. and retired from FAA in Hillard, Fla. He is survived by his wife, Maxine; two daughters, Joy Webb of Manchester and Jan Vickery of St. Augustine, Fla.; a son, Gary Dow of Boise, ID; two grandsons, Eric Golden of Manchester and Zachary Vickery of Boise, ID; great-grandson, Logan Golden of Manchester; and siblings, Gerald A. (Rachael) Dow of Mesa, Ariz. and Elma Jean (Roland) Waggoner of Republican City, Neb. There will be no public memorial service.
