FROM Richard McDaniel via the Internet: Gilbert Day came to Palestine, Tx in 1850 with Tom Black, Joe Black and Jim Woodward and his family of eleven children and another faily named White. They came from Alabama and were on the road for four weeks. Day brought 20 or 25 Negroes which he owned. The white familes came in carryalls, somehting like ahack; the Negroes, in wagons; they brought their bedding and cooking utensils and a few chairs stuck in the wagon upside down.On top of thouse were chairs. To save space they carried buckets. When we stopped to cook our meals we lifted out a trunk or box and ate our meals on these. Brought no furniture--nothing but clothing and things we were obliged to have. The ferry boat that we crossed the Missipi River on was propelled by two mules uring a wheel. We came by way of Little Rock and crossed the Red River. We landed in Anderson County about six miles north of tow at a camp ground. There were eighteen families who left Alabama with us but only the above mentioned landed at the campground with us. The rest strayed off or stopped at other places. The campground had a big arbor covered with boards and number of log cabins made like a box house and logs fastened together to the plate with large pins. There were there for the benefit ofthe crowds who attended the camp meetings. Moved into Plaestine.
