Dow Passed Away On Saturday Glen G. Dow, a lifelong resident of Alma, died Saturday evening at the Alma Memorial hospital at the age of 70 years. Mr. Dow was stricken with a heart attack late Thursday afternoon and his condition remained critical until the end. Born and reared in the Alma community, Mr. Dow attended the Alma public schools in his youth, participating in high school sports and in later years continued his athletic career with local baseball clubs, his services being particularly in demand as a baseball pitcher. His early life was spent engaged in farming and the operation of a dairy just out-side the limits of the city. Following his retirement from the farm, he opened the Dow Real Estate and Insurance Agency in Alma, a venture which proved most rewarding. Throughout his entire life, Mr. Dow was devoted to the growth and welfare of his home community and numbered among Alma's prominent leaders in civic and community affairs. He gave freely of his time and effort to all worthy projects and promotions and never once shirked his duty in an effort to expand the city of Alma, its school or community in general. Mr. Dow, at various times, served on the City Council and was mayor. He had also served as member of the Board of Education of District No. 2, as well as with other civic and governmental agencies. He was a member of the Harlan Lodge, AF & AM No. 116, the American Legion, in which he had held various offices, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, having served in World War I, with the famed 89th Division in France and Germany. Mr. Dow was proud of his long residence in Alma and this community, often boasting that the community which he called home, was one of the finest communities in the world and that no finer people could be found anywhere. He possessed a vast amount of knowledge gained through the years and was often consulted by those in search of early happenings and historic events of the area. Mr. Dow will be sorely missed by his fellow citizens as well as members of his family. To our knowledge we have never met a man who was so willing to tackle any project and to give so freely of his time for the welfare of the community in which he made his home. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Lois; sons and a daughter, Elden of Tullahoma, Tenn., Gerald of Tabor, Ia., Duane of Alma, and Mrs. Rolland Waggoner of Republican City; his mother, Mrs. Nora Seckman of Kearney, a sister, Mrs. Andy Haas of Alma, 12 grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends. Services were conducted from the First Christian church on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. Francis Houchen officiating and burial was in the Alma cemetery. The Zulauf-Banta Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. ----------------------------------------------------------------- From "Alma: Towards the Year 2000", published in 1992 as part of the Nebraska Quasquicentennial: GLEN G.
