a. Note:   Obituary from the Harlan County Journal, August 21, 1980: MRS. LOIS V. DOW Mrs. Lois Viola Dow was born the third child of nine children to Elbert and Ethelyn (Murphy) Mathes on October 5, 1903 at Almena, Kans. She departed this life Thursday morning, August 14, 1980 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebr. at the age of 76 years, 10 months, and nine days. Lois attended grade schools in Kansas and later at Alma after moving here with her parents around 1917. On January 3, 1923 Lois was united in marriage to Glen G. Dow at Alma, Nebr. To this union four children were born: John Elden, Gerald Alvin, Elma Jean and Duane Lee. The family resided in on the Grandfather Myers farm just southwest of Alma until moving to town in 1944. Lois had resided at the Colonial Villa Good Samaritan Center in Alma since the fall of 1978. Lois had been an active member of the First Christian Church before her health failed, having joined the fellowship through baptism in 1930. She had been an active member of the Christian Womens Fellowship of Priscellas. Lois was a devoted Christian, taking her faith very seriously. Lois was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Glen in 1965; three brothers, Lee, Roy, and Niles Mathes; and four sisters, Ruth Mathes, Hattie Lambson, Adaline Clap Hardy and Berniece Mathes. She leaves to mourn her passing her four children, John E. Dow of Hilliard, Fla., Gerald A. Dow of Hawarden, Ia., Mrs. Elma Jean Waggoner of Republican City, Nebr. and Duane L. Dow of Alma; three daughters-in-law, Maxine, Rachael, and Mary; one son-in-law, Rolland Waggoner; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Neta Haas, of Alma; one sister, Mrs. Della Gossett, of Albany, Ore.; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; other relatives and a host of friends. Lois was a devoted wife and mother who was loved by all. She was a person afflicted with poor health and much pain but never complained, but rose above her handicap to inspire and bring cheer to everyone that knew her. Her Christian love was radiant within her. Funeral services were held Monday, August 18, at 2:00 p.m. at First Christian Church, Alma, with Rev. John P. Thompson officiating. Soloist Mrs. Arlie Madison was accompanied by Mrs. Jack Hardin, organist. Pallbearers were Ken Dow, Ron Dow, Dave Waggoner, Mark Dow, John Haussermann and Paul Waggoner. Honorary bearers were Warren Fowler, H.G. Furse, Les Lowe, C.E. Freas, Roy Hogeland, Ray Shoemaker and Clarence Waggoner. Burial was in the Alma cemetery. Banta-Torrey Funeral Home of Alma had charge of the arrangements.
