a. Note:   From "Alma: Towards the Year 2000", published in 1992 as part of the Nebraska Quasquicentennial: SAMUEL AND NORA SECKMAN Nora Elma Myers was born in 1878 to John and Elizabeth Myers. In 1894 Nora became the bride of Frank Wesley Dow and they had three children: Glen Blyth, born in 1895, Neta Faye born in 1897, and Naomi Berniece, born in 1903. Naomi died at the age of seven. Glen died in 1965 and Neta in 1986. Frank passed away in 1915. Nora married Samuel G. Seckman, born in Mount Sterling, Ill., in 1891, in 1916. He worked for the Burlington Railroad and resided in Alma. He died in 1959. Nora had five grandchildren. She died in February 1969. Per Maxine Dow, 2004: She was very talkative, insistent, assertive, "had to have her way", always demanded to sit in the backseat of a car, often disagreed with her daughter Neta, and was a good cook. Obituary from the Harlan County Journal, February 13, 1969: Mrs. Sam Seckman Passed Away Saturday Mrs. Nora E. Seckman, a life-long resident of Alma, died Saturday, February 8 at the Good Samaritan hospital at Kearney, Nebraska at the age of 90 years, 9 months and 17 days, following a heart attack. Mrs. Seckman had been a resident of Saint Luke's Home in Kearney for several years. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Sam Seckman, a son, Glen G. Dow, and a daughter, Naomi Berniece, who died in childhood at the age seven years. Mrs. Seckman is survived by her daughter, Neta Dow Haas, a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Glen G. Dow, a son-in-law, Andy Haas, five grandchildren, Rev. Emmett Haas of Lincoln, J. Eldon Dow, Tullahoma, Tennessee, Gerald A. Dow, Hawarden, Iowa, Mrs. Rolland Waggoner, Republican City, Nebraska and Duane L. Dow, Alma, Nebraska, 16 great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, other relatives and many friends. Mrs. Seckman's father was one of the earliest settlers in this community. He purchased land at the west edge of Alma in the year 1873 and returned to this community with his family in the year 1879, erecting his home now located on First Street and also erected the first two story buildings in the business district, the buildings occuped by the Whitmire and Chandlers stores on the north side of Main Street. These buildings were erected in 1885 and were long known as the Myers block of three buildings. Mrs. Seckman still owned two of the buildings at the time of her death. Funeral services were held at the Zulauf-Banta chapel Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. James Hopkins, pastor of the First Christian church officiating and bural was in the Alma cemetery. The Zulauf-Banta Funeral Serivce was in charge of the arrangements.
