Notes
a. Note:   Herbert B. Dow appears in the 1880 Richland County Wisconsin census with wife Rhoda, son Frank and daughter Bertha. Herbert B. Dow appears in the 1920 Harlan County Nebraska census with wife Lizzie. Lizzie lists her birthplace and her parents' birthplaces as Pennsylvania, which is probably not correct. Herbert B. Dow appears in the 1910 Harlan County Nebraska census with wife Rhoda E and son Vere. In this census, it indicates Nora had 5 children but only 4 are still living. Herbert B. Dow appears in the 1900 Harlan County Nebraska census with wife Rhoda E and children Myra E, Roy S, and Vere H. ------------------------------------------- From the Harlan County Journal, July 16, 1926: HARLAN COUNTY PIONEER DIES H. B. Dow, one of the early settlers of Harlan county, died in Alma Wednesday evening at 6:30 o'clock, following an illness covering many months. Mr. Dow was afflicted with a peculiar illness, and as a result, months of wasting of his physical body terminated in death on Wednesday, when the end came peacefully and apparently without pain. As this announcement is being written funeral arrangement have not been made, but in all probability will be held from the residence of his daughter, Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Furse, Friday afternoon. An obituary will appear in the Journal in its next issue. ------------------------------------------- From the Harlan County Journal, July 23, 1926: OBITUARY Herbert Bush Dow was born near Ithaca, Wisconsin, on February 17th, 1851, being a son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry S. Dow. His early life was spent on a farm with his parents, and while yet a boy, his father and eldest brother enlisted as recruits in the Civil war. During the period of the war the father died. Thus deprived of the head of the family, the mother shifted this responsibility to the son, and although yet young in years, Herbert managed the affairs on the farm, and at the same time assumed responsibilities in the care of his mother and the younger brothers and sisters. On April 6th, 1873, he was united in marriage to Miss Rhoda Elizabeth Simpson, at the same time continuing his residence at Ithaca, Wisconsin, for a period of a few years. In 1884 the family came to Nebraska, making the trip from the old home over the covered wagon route. A homestead was selected about five miles south of Alma. The family resided thereon for 8 years when they moved to Alma, where the deceased acted in the capacity of deputy sheriff, under the term of J. D. Reneau, as sheriff of Harlan county. At the conclusion of Mr. Reneau's term, Mr. Dow was elected to that office and very capably filled the official position for a term of four years. At the termination of his services as sheriff, Mr. Dow returned to the farm where he resided until the time of the death of his wife wich was on August 22, 1917. During his last years on the farm he represented his district on the county board of supervisors and also acted on the board of education. When a young man, the deceased associated himself with the Freewill Baptist church at Ithaca. On moving to Harlan county, he transferred his membership to the Christian church in this city. Herbert B. Dow died at Alma, Nebraska, July 14th, 1926. He leaves to mourn his death two daughters, Mrs. H. C. Furse of Alma, Mrs. T. B. Sweazy of Chicago, Illinois, and one son, H. V. Dow, of Lexington, Nebraska, who were present at the funeral, besides 17 grandchildren and 5 great-grand children, 1 brother, 3 sisters, besides a host of friends. The wife and two sons, Frank and LeRoy, preceeded the father in death. God in his mercy has called this spirit to abide with those gone before thus terminating a life which had been spent in the sympathetic care and protection of those he loved. May he rest in peace. The deceased was a member of the local lodge M. W. of A. and members of that fraternal society acted as pallbearers at the time of the funeral, which was held from the residence of Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Furse on Friday afternoon, July 16th, conducted by Rev. Burleigh, pastor of the Congregational church. Burial was made in the Alma cemetery.
