Note: In the 1880 census, Rhoda's father was born in Delaware and mother in Ohio. Obituary from the Harlan County Journal, date unknown: Mrs. H. B. Dow Answers Deaths Call Rhoda Elizabeth Simpson was born near Richland Center, Wis., October 22, 1853. Her early life was spent in that state near her birthplace and on April 6, 1873, she was united in marriage to H. B. Dow. After a short residence in wisconsin, Mr. and Mrs. Dow came west, locating on a homstead about five miles south of Alma, where they resided for several years. While Mr. Dow held the office of sheriff of Harlan county the family resided in Alma, later removing to their farm where the subject of this sketch died Wednesday morning, Aug. 22, 1917, following the untireing efforts of medical skill and loving hands to remove the cause of her illness. The deceased was the mother of five children, Roy and Frank proceeding her in death, while Mrs. H. C. Furse of Alma, Mrs. T. B. Sweazy of Chicago and Vere Dow of Alma, besides the husband, are the immediate relatives who mourn the departure of a kind and loving mother, and a true and noble wife and companion. In early life Mrs. Dow confessed the Christ and according to the dictation of her own conscience, has followed His teaching steadfastly. During her illness, which covered almost one year, she was never known to complain regarding her condition. She was brave to the end, seemingly with unwavering faith that the call for her coming insured for her an eternal home with Him "who doeth all things well." The deceased leaves many friends in our city to mourn her death. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors, and until late years took a very active part in behalf of that order. She held true friendship with each member of the local organization and was very instrumental in the success of the Alma lodge. Funeral services will be held from the Evangelical church, Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Bullock pastor of the Christian church of which she was a member, assisted by Rev. J. A. Rousey, pastor of the Methodist church. The remains were laid to rest in the Alma cemetery.
