Notes
a. Note:   William Clever was a man of large person ,very active and fond of athletic sports and hunting. At one time he lived on a hill north of Port Penn. He was awakened early one morning by a terrible bellowing noise proceeding apparently from something in the river. Upon coming to the river bank ,he saw some large animal floundering on the mud flat, which was then bare of water, the tide being down, and he immediately proceeded to capture the thing. Which he did after some trouble, and found it to be a whale, about 35 ft in length. It was taken to Philadelphia , Pennsylvania, and exhibited in a show. He told me, (S. Cleaver) that when a young boy , the land upon which Fort Delaware now stands was bare only upon low tideland that he used to go Duck hunting of which large numbers accumulated to feed. Once he picked up a keg of lard on the sand bar. Afterwards reeds gradually formed and soon the island appeared above the water .
