Notes
a. Note:   ive named Alonzo. But the 1880 Census shows him as James Lon Turner, which is what all his relatives knew him by; and he was always called Lon. A nephew and a grandson named after him were named the short form, Lon. He was born in White Co., GA, where his father had moved about 1868, from Union Co. Both of Lon's parents were indeed born in Union Co. That is where his mother took he and his siblings after his father died in White Co. in 1889.
Lon Turner was born before "Custer's Last Stand," yet lived to see men travel to the moon. He was a successful and hardworking farmer, and wagoner. His nephew, Lon Duckworth, was named after him. Lon Duckworth lost his father at an early age, and drew largely upon his uncle Lon Turner's example of hard work, honesty, and endurance, and managed to grow from an obscure backwoods upbringing, to advance with honors through college and law school. Lon Duckworth became a prominent attorney and executive in Atlanta (VP of Life of Georgia.) (Brother Henry Duckworth pursued the same path inspired by Lon Turner, becoming Chief Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court.) For these brothers the Duckworth Library is named, at Young Harris College. And thus, although Lon Turner never attended college, there is a college library which, in a way, bears his name.
When he married Susan Jane "Susie" Duckworth, they moved for about four years to Maryville, TN. Unable to obtain work in the mines of Copper Hill, TN, he managed a farm in Maryville. His younger brother, Julius, had migrated to Polk Co., TN, at some point. Lon and Susie returned to Arkaquah, Union Co., GA, about 1900. Their old homeplace is still owned by descendants.
Note:   Some have listed him as James Alonzo Turner, and apparently he was named after an older relat
