Continued: BACKGROUND OF ABEDNIGO TURNER, II: He was generally known as Ab, and appears on some records as such. His name usually appears as Abednigo or Abednego, and at least once as Ebednego. Ab Turner was named for his uncle, Abednego Turner of VA, brother to Shadrack and Meshack. (Some have doubted that all three existed, or if they were all brothers, but it has been proven that they were; see notes under Meshack Turner.) Meshack named his son Ab after his brother Abednigo, and sometimes people confuse these two Abednegos. Ab was born in 1754 in VA. He died 1802 in Abbeville Co., SC, and was listed there on the 1800 Census. He is said to have been associated with Henry County, VA, based on 1770 land records there, and thus it is feasible that he was born there. But whereas he was only 16 in 1770, this land record (from a loosely quoted source) may not have been for him; or it could have been for his uncle Abednego. Later on, Ab was recorded on land transactions in Greene Co., GA, though he was living in Abbeville Co., SC, at the time of his death. KNOWN LEGAL RECORDS FOR ABEDNIGO TURNER, II: 1770: May have acquired land in Henry Co., VA, or at least been related to owner of same. 1785 / 1788: Found on land records of Greene Co., GA, (formed from neighboring counties of Washington, Oglethorpe, and Wilkes. His Greene Co. land is said to have been somewhat near his father Meshack's land in Wilkes Co.) Abednego married (1) _____ COLLIER about 1774 in VA. Miss Collier was born about 1754. Abednigo also married (2) Phoebe Waller, daughter of John Waller and Elizabeth _____ in 1801 in Abbeville Co., SC. Ab was also a witness on Phebe's grandfather John Waller's will, which mentions his granddaughter Phebe Turner. John Echols of Halifax Co., VA, declares he sold to Ebednego [sic] Turner of Pittsylvania Co., VA., a slave boy named Backus on April 1, 1787. Mat Bilbo and Zachariah Bays so testified. Certified by both in Wilkes Co., GA, Aug. 28, 1790. [NOTE: I don't know what this means, buying him in VA and people witnessing the transaction in GA. Sounds like a follow-up legal certification of some sort.] 1800 CENSUS: ABBEVILLE CO., SC: Abednigo Turner: 1 male under 10 1 male 45 or older 1 female under 10 1 female 16-25 15 slaves GREEN COUNTY, GEORGIA, DEEDS BOOK 1, Pg 356:19 Aug 1788William Campbell of Wilkes Co. to ABEDNEGO TURNER of the county aforesaid, for 200 pds. sterling, 287-1/2 acres in Washington Co., now Greene Co., on the Oconee River bounded SE by John Harrington; NW by Marshall; granted the said Campbell 3 March 1785. - - - - - WAS THE FOLLOWING A NAMESAKE OF AB TURNER?
