Notes
a. Continued:   VERY IMPORTANT:
DESPITE POPULAR BELIEF, THIS MICAJAH IS NOT THE SON OF JOHN AND ANNA (BROWNE) TURNER OF VA. THIS JOHN DID HAVE A SON NAMED MICAJAH, BUT HE WAS A DIFFERENT ONE. (Thanks to Cliff Turner for bringing these facts to light. This is discussed in greater detail below, under the heading of "MIND YOUR MICAJAHS").
BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR MICAJAH TURNER, 1777 (VA) - 1875 (GA):
According to his gravestone, as well as various family and Census records, Micajah was born in 1777 in VA, and died in 1875 in GA. He could have been born in Henry Co., VA; according to the Turner DNA Group Study he is related to Turners in neighboring counties such as Bedford, Pittsylvania, and Patrick; as well as more distant counties such as Caroline and Cumberland. Sometimes he was listed as Micager, as seen on the 1870 GA Census.
He and wife Nancy are buried at Tesnatee Baptist Cemetery north of Cleveland, GA, in White Co., as one approaches Turner's Corner on US Hwy. 129. (It is NOT "Tesantee," as some have mistakenly recorded. Tesnatee is locally pronounced "TESS-nee.") Micajah's headstone was hand-carved from soapstone by their son, John Berryman "Berry" Turner. Nancy's stone is lost, but she and Micajah share a modern granite stone provided by later descendants. Berry carved many stones in that quaint old cemetery, some of which are beautifully artistic.
  U. S. CENSUS:
= 1790 CENSUS: Records are mostly lost. (He would not have been listed anyway since he was 13, and only the head of the household was listed on the Census from 1790 through 1840.)
= 1800 CENSUS: Now age 23, but still not listed on the Census. This was probably due to living on the farm of his parents or other relatives, which was common for young men, and thus he would not have been listed. There is a Misha Turner in SC, which was probably Meshack; there is DNA evidence that Micajah was akin to, if not descended from, Meshack, (discussed below). In 1800 there is also an Abednego Turner II in Abbeville Co., SC, (son of old Meshack Turner), whom some speculate could have been Micajah's father, but there is no linking evidence.
= 1810 CENSUS: Micajah is living in Pendleton District, SC. The family category codes were as follows:
  5 1 1 _ _ (5 males under 10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 16-25).
  1 _ 1 _ _ (1 Female under 10, 1 female 16-25). No others in the home; no slaves.
This is confusing, because it shows both he and his wife as being 25 or uder, yet they should both have been 33. Was this a clerical error? Must have been, because to have had 7 children by age 23 means they would have had the first one at age 16, and had one every year for 7 years. But it must be them, for there is no other Micajah Turner in SC in 1810, and we know he was there, at least when son Jarrett was born in 1806. Could he have already moved into GA somewhere by 1810? I cannot tell, because the 1810 Census for GA is not available; it is one of several states' Censuses from 1810 that is lost.
= 1820 CENSUS: Living north of Cleveland, in Habersham Co., GA, (in the portion that became White Co. in 1856). The family category codes were as follows:
  2 0 1 2 1 _ (2 males age 10 or under, 1 male 16-18, 2 males 16-26, 1 male 26-45).
  1 _ 1 1 _ (1 female 10 or under, 1 female 16-26, 1 female 26-45).
The 1820 also states there are 3 persons in the home engaged in commerce, none in agriculture, and none in manufacturing.
= 1830 CENSUS: Continues living north of Cleveland, in Habersham Co., GA. The family category codes were as follows: Page 66: Micager Turner 1 male 10-15; 1 male 20-30; 1 male 50-60; 1 female10-15; 1 female 15-20; 1 female 50-60
(There is another Micajah Turner in 1830 in Pickens Co., SC, who could be a relative).
= 1840 CENSUS: Living in Habersham Co., GA. The family category codes were as follows:
  _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 1 (1 male age 60 to 69).
  _ _ _ 1 _ _ _ _ 1 (1 female age 15-19, 1 female age 60 to 69).
= 1850 CENSUS: Living in Habersham Co., GA.
= 1860 to 1870 CENSUS: Living in White Co., GA, (his portion of Habersham Co. having been formed into White Co.) His homeplace has been identified as being in the area of the new White Co. High School.
  TURNER DNA STUDY:
A current Turner Group DNA Study in the US shows descendants of Micajah Turner as matches for descendants of Richard and Abigail Turner (born about 1648, came to VA from Lands End, Cornwall, England.) It is possible that Micajah descends from one of the sons of Richard's son, John. If not John, then it would have to be son James.
  THE MOVE TO SC:
By 1796, Micajah and Nancy had left Virginia and were living in South Carolina, since that is where some of their first children were born. Some say they were there by about 1795, but I have not found Micajah on the 1800 Census there. There is a Misha Turner in Edgefield Co., SC, in 1800, but this is probably not him; Misha was probably a nickname for old Meshack, a relative.
The 1810 Census of Pendleton District, SC, shows Micajah living between Samuel Rolins and William Harris.
  THE MOVE TO GA:
The 1820 Census shows that sometime shortly before 1820, Micajah and Nancy had moved to northernmost Habersham Co., Georgia, (the part that is now White Co.,) north of Cleveland.
Their son Jarrett moved over the mountains in 1832, to pioneer Union Co. By 1850, another possible son of Micajah and Nancy (or other type of relative) Bailus Turner is found near Jarrett in Union Co., GA, who like him was born in SC. It is noted that Bailus was in Buncombe Co., NC, in 1840, but may have nonetheless been related to Micajah and Jarrett. Still others say that Bailus (aka Bailis) came from SC with Micajah and Nancy and family, and was a son of theirs, but no known documentation exists to verify this theory. Some say Bailus was the son of a related Turner, but not of Jarrett's father, Micajah.
The 1870 Census shows Micajah's and Nancy's grandson, Henry Berry Turner (25) and his wife Frances (18) living with them on their farm, employed in farm work and house keeping, respectively.
Micajah and Nancy left a great legacy in Habersham / White Co., Lumpkin Co., and other areas, and many Turners in Georgia and across America trace their lineage to them.
  MIND YOUR MICAJAHS!
This Micajah was born 1777 in VA, moved to SC probably before 1800, moved to GA by 1820. Parents unknown: They MAY have been Abednego Turner II and (Unknown) Miss Collier, though this is only vaguely circumstantial, and other possible parental links are being explored.
There was the Micajah of 1728 > then his son John > then his son Micajah II. This latter Micajah stayed in VA. This is NOT the lineage of the Micajah of GA (1777-1875). John mentioned in his will of 1844, his son Micajah who was also still living in VA. But Micajah Turner of GA (born 1777 in VA) was in GA by 1820.
Moreover, according to the US Census, the Micajah whom John Turner mentions in his will continued living in VA contemporaneously with Micajah of GA. Thus they are not the same person. The parentage of Micajah of Georgia remains unknown as of 2005. But DNA testing shows he comes from the line of old Meshack or his brother Shadrack Turner of VA.
Interestingly, the father of this John Turner of VA was also named Micajah. (That is, the "Virginia Micajah's" grandfather was also named Micajah.) John's father, "Old Micajah," lived from 1728 to probably 1762-1764. His will was proven in Cumberland Co., VA, in 1764. When this eldest Micajah died in the 1760's, John (and siblings Mary and Lewis) were assigned Jonas Meadors of Cumberland Co., VA, as their guardian. It is very significant to note that Meshack Turner (possible grandfather to the "Georgia Micajah,") had two sisters (Elizabeth and Sarah) who also had Jonas Meadors as their guardian, though they lived in Caroline Co. at the time of the court approval of same.
It is all very perplexing, and although the Virginia Micajah and the Georgia Micajah are proven to be different persons, they nonetheless must have been related. Moreover, the Meadors / Meadows family of VA continually interwove with the lives of the Turners of VA.
There was yet another Micajah of VA, born later, who married Mahala Bond in the early 1800's. He was NOT this Micajah who came to GA.
There was yet another Micajah Turner in SC at the time THIS Micajah moved to GA. I have no idea who he was or where he came from.
They are all probably kin somehow. More Turner males need to participate in the Turner DNA Group Study, to help sort these lines out. It is a simple, quick, and accurate procedure. Tremendous progress has already been made, and new participants often find instant solutions to their lineage questions:
