1. Title:   1840 Census Salem Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA
Page:   Page
Author:   McFarland, James Enumerator

Notes
a. Note:   The 1840 Census lists 7 children for Samuel Newhouse. Together with the 1850 Census record, we can assume Josiah was born about 1839. The 1870 Census was a obvious mistake; age "23" when he is listed as age 21 in 1860!
It seems that Josiah married Lavinia [widow? or divorced? Stoker] Rumbaugh, sometime between 1880 and 1891. Must check the 1900 Census. Lavina was first married to George E. Stoker. By 1900 they appear to have separated.
There is some confusion about the marital status of Lavinia aka Vinie. 1. Date: January 31, 1891 Power of Attorney of Mary Rumbaugh et al. to A.J. Newdorfer states that Mary Rumbaugh is widow (of John M. Rumbaugh]; George Stoker is husband of Lavinia Stoker. Et. al. includes Lavinia Stoker and Izora Newdorfer. Signatures include Josiah Newhouse, whose status is not defined.
  2. Date: April 4, 1891 Deed of Mary Rumbaugh et al. to William Hugus states that Mary Rumbaugh is the widow of John M. Rumbaugh and et al. includes: A. J. Newdorfer and Izora E. his wife; George Stoker and Vinie his wife; Jesse [Josiah] Newhouse and Vinnie his wife..heirs. Final signatures include Mary Rumbaug; A.J. Newdorfer and Izora E. Newdorfer; Anna Stoker and George E. Stoker; Vinie Newhouse and Josiah Newhouse
  3. Date: March 7, 1900 Deed of Josiah Newhouse and Lavina Newhouse his wife of Salem Twp. to John D. Cassidy. The signature of Lavinia was witnessed at Pittsburgh.
  4. Date: October 5, 1901 Deed of Lavina Newhouse, alias dictus Lavina Stoker of Pittsburgh and Josiah Newhouse, her husband of Hempfield Twp. to John McCreary states that Lavina Newhouse, alias dictus, Lavina Stoker and Zora Newdorfer are the two children of the late John Rumbaugh
The above information Suggests that Lavina Rumbaugh was married to and devorced from George E. Stoker. She then married Josiah Newhouse sometime between 1880 and 1891. Sometime prior to 1900 she separated from Josiah.
