Note: She grew up on a tobacco farm in Yadkin County, North Carolina. S he attended Courtney School, about 5 miles from her home, for 12 years, gr aduating in 1956. She participated in many school activities, most notab ly basketball (4'11", 98 pounds). After high school she worked brief ly in Hanes knitting mill in Winston-Salem. She attended High Point Colle ge for one semester. She then worked as a secretary in Winston-Salem at s everal companies including Dun and Bradstreet. She was trained as an airl ine stewardess in Minneapolis and worked for Piedmont Airlines out of Wash ington, D.C., where she flew on the DC-3. She worked again in Winston-Sal em and then joined the U.S. Geological Survey in Washington, where we me t. She left the Survey when we married and rejoined in Reston, Va., in 19 74. She worked in California as a secretary in Marine Geology and lat er in the Earthquake program, where she became administrative office for t he Office of Earthquake Studies in the western region. She retired wi th me in 1993. In California, she attended night school at Foothill and D eAnza Colleges for many years, specializing in travel studies.
