Notes
a. Note:   My grandmother died when I was a very small child and I do not remem ber her. My mother said that she came over from Germany on a sailing sh ip and often talked about the voyage. I have heard how she used to spe nd hours up in the bow of the ship where there was a figurehead. Clare Ma nn Dalladia told me that she also was told stories about the voyage and re members being told that she was 12 when she came over (she was eight). Do rothy told my mother that she spoke high German. She was often referr ed to as Muzzy by my mother. I have her birth certificate. She was bapti zed in the Lutheran Parish of Linden in Hannover, Germany, as Amalia Carol ine but called herself Dorothea Amalia on her wedding license and wrote Do rothy Amelia in a bible. On Rose P. Mann's certificate of baptism s he is called Dorothy (nee) Schaefer, an error. Linden Parish is in the Ci ty of Hannover. Her father was from elsewhere in the state of Hannover a nd her mother from Brunswick and we do not know what they were doing in Li nden at the time of here birth. She came to America on the ship Hermine, arriving in Baltimore on Ju ne 5, 1868 (see notes on Philipp Schaberg). In 1870 she lived with her fa mily in the 5th Ward of York, Pennsylvania. In the 1880 census, when s he was 20, she lived in the 3rd Ward with James M. Danner as a cook. S he said here that both her parents were born in Hannover (see Francis F. S chaberg, her brother, who said that his mother was born in Brunswick). S he married Frank Mann in 1882 and I have the certificate from the churc h. In 1900 she lived at 520 S. George St. and I cannot read her first nam e. She is a widow who has had 4 children all of them living. With her a re children Frank, John, Philip, and Rose. In 1903 she lived as a widow a nd ran a small grocery store at 520 South George Street. Her eldest son F rank was her apprentice. In the 1910 census, she was at 520 S. George S t. and was a grocer. With her were her son Frank and his family and her d aughter Rosie P., still unmarried. The same address is given in the 19 13 Directory. In 1920 she lived at 728 S. Water Street (later Pershing Av e.), a house with George T. Willard 48 head, wife Sadie N. 45, and son Jo hn Brooks. She was called Dora Mann 59, head of her own household, and a p rictical nurse. In 1921 she lived at the same address. In 1907, this hou se was the home of Anthony J. Mann, the nephew of her late husband. In 19 30 she was at 728 South Pershing Ave., York, PA, at age 69, where she own ed the house and had a renter. She died here in 1933 when I was a baby li ving in the same house. St. Patricks church records show her death as 2 April 1933.
