Notes
a. Note:   In the 1900 census (E.D. 195, sheet 4, line 36), she gives her bir th date and says she came to America in 1852. In fact, she came to Ameri ca in 1851, arriving in Baltimore from Bremen on September 20 on the sh ip Albert. She appears at number 99 in the passenger list of 197 and ga ve her name as Dorothea Bahm (the "a" with an umlaut). She gave her a ge as 18, her occupation as farmer, her nationality as Hannau, and her ho me town as "Brurkenau" or something like that. I cannot find such a pla ce on a modern map. No Bahm family members are listed with her. Instea d, her name appears amidst a family Muller (u with an umlaut), five member s, aged 15 to 23, male and female, all from the same home town as Dorothea . The above was shown to German researcher Sabine Schleichert who repli ed in an email dated 9-7-01: "The territory of origin in the line for Dorothea Bohm is indead Hannov er and NOT Hanau; the the last two letters seem to be missing on the cop y. This is made definite by the two places mentioned before her: Gotting en and Osnabruck. BUT: the entry seems to be a mistake. The place of or igin is almost unreadable - I read B...kenau. But the first entries on t he copies as well as the last ones do have exactly the same place, a nd in case of the last entries it's easier to read: Brukenau (with u umla ut). AND: The territory for this Bruckenau is Bavaria - not at all Hanno ver. It seems that the writer of the list just forgot to write "Bavari a" into Dorothea's line. This is supported by the appearance of some (tho ugh not too many) Bohms in the phone book for Bad Bruckenau (as it is call ed today). Also, the place is not too far from Mombris, and we will ju st take a short look for Dorothea, too. Unfortunately, my handbook says t hat the church records for Bad Bruckenau were destroyed by a fire in 182 4, so that the records start only after that date. It should be enou gh to confirm her place of origin." Sabine Schleichert searched the church records at Bad Bruchenau and f ound some Boehms but not Dorothea. She listed several reason why Doroth ea might yet be from there and not be found: - the index might be incomplete. - she may have been born before 1823. - she may have been born illegitimately and would therefore be entered u nder her mother's name and may have been legitimized later. - she may have lived in Bad Bruchenau but was not born there. - she may have been born in the general vicinity and just listed Bad Bru chenau in the ship list as the nearest big town. The Albert was built by the shipyard of Johann Lange, Vegesack (ne ar Bremen), for the Brothers Kulenkampff of Bremen and was launched Ju ne 1, 1841. She was a full rigged ship (with square sails on all three ma sts). She measured 107 by 30 feet and had a depth of 18 feet. Her mast er on Dorothea's voyage was H. Reichl. In 1855 the ship was sold to a Nor wegian firm and was renamed Prince Albert. According to Donna Shermeyer, York Historical Society, she was the se cond wife of Anthony Mann, but I have seen no evidence of this and doubt i t. In 1900 she lived at 516 S. George Street with daughters Margaret, Ba rbara, and Catherine. In 1910 she lived at the same address with daught er Barbara. Her daughter-in-law Rosina, widow of her son George A., liv ed at 506, and her daughter-in-law Dorothy, widow of her son Franklin liv ed at 520.
